SAHA supports Aslı Çavuşoğlu's solo exhibition "TunState" , inspired from tardigrades, an organism which has the ability to temporarily slow down or stop their biological functions under extreme temperatures for years or decades as tuns. Curated by Sergey Kanstedal and assisted by Yuliya Say, the show is on view between 6 November – 23 December 2022 at Barriera Associazione.
Çavuşoğlu explores an alternative to the climate crisis scenarios of extinction happening either at high or low temperatures, she proposes a TunState, a third alternative for the survival of living beings by setting examples of different species which are highly adaptive. The exhibition draws connections between existence and extinction through exploring both the physical and metaphoric connotations of natural materials. Materials affected by high and low temperatures stand out as the main elements in the works.
Aslı Çavuşoğlu (1982, İstanbul) examines the way in which cultural and historical facts are transformed, represented, and interpreted by individuals. Working across various media, Çavuşoğlu often assumes the role of an interpreter, writer or facilitator in her projects in order to highlight the precarious and subjective nature of our shared histories.
About Barriera Associazione
Barriera is a non-profit space for contemporary art founded in Turin in 2007 by a group of collectors. Through a series of initiatives, exhibitions and events, this art space creates opportunities for dialogue between artists, curators and collectors and engenders contaminations with other cultural environments. Barriera promotes curatorial strategies that encourage young artists to continue and widen their research while orienting it, through a sharing process, towards a production fed by the site specificities. Barriera is curated by Sergey Kantsedal and Yuliya Say.
