Guido Casaretto

Biennale Arcipelago Mediterranneo (BAM) | Palermo, Italy

SAHA provides support for Guido Casaretto’s project within the scope of the Biennale Arcipelago Mediterranneo in ZACentrale. Fondazione Merz’s third edition of BAM titled “INSATURO” adresses themes of insularity, contact and borders, dialogue and possibility. Curated by Agata Polizzi, Casaretto’s The day i proposed to change my life, i lived only to prepare myself for the new one composed of the works that are interconnected with each other both conceptually and objectively. The sculptures are grouped together as though islands form dialogue with one another. Strong and compact presences, they allude to the Mediterranean coast, with its vast geography and the stories emerging thereof. Casaretto’s solo show in Biennale Arcipelago Mediterranneo can be visited between 23 September 2022 - 22 January 2023.

About Guido Casaretto
Guido Casaretto (1981, Istanbul) lives and works in Istanbul. He studied nat the Bologna Fine arts Academy in Bologna, Italy. He is one of the founders of Sanatorium. Casaretto’s works while trying to understand the human’s most natural ways of perceiving our surroundings and of reproducing these processes, is a transference experience of a visual sensation to a haptic one. With each work witnessing the many processes and steps of its production, Casaretto’s meticulous crafting builds up the physicality and tactility of producing them, especially apparent in the exaggerated dimensions of some. His experimentation with materials, such as concrete, skin, soil, and epoxy, is the spine for his body of works: the materials not only determine the outcome by a deliberate imitation of their nature, they are also heavy with the historical, art historical and technological connotations.

About ZaCentrale
Named after Mario Merz, the Fondazione was established in 2005 as a Centre for Contemporary Art with the intent to host exhibitions, events, education-related activities, and to further research and explore art.
Born and developed in open contrast to the concept of art as monument, that is, as a powerful but static image of memory, the Fondazione today interprets its role as the energy powerhouse of art. The place of the works of art, which has gone from being “artist’s house” to a “house for artists”, has inevitably matured its role over the years, changing from an original impulse of survival, and has become a player aware and pro- active with regard to new opportunities.

About BAM
BAM - Biennale Arcipelago Mediterraneo is an international research festival in the field of visual arts, performing arts and theater dedicated to the peoples and cultures that overlook the sea and focused on the themes of hospitality and dialogue. The third edition of BAM, promoted by the MeNO Association and the Merz Foundation with the artistic direction of Andrea Cusumano and with the patronage of the Municipality of Palermo , aims to transform the city into a great hub for artistic experimentation.  No curatorial concept, but a concatenation of events in residence designed to facilitate the encounter and collaboration between artists. The theme of plural identities, of archipelagos that stand out and interact with each other is thus again declined in a project that expands into the spaces, squares and streets of Palermo.
