SAHA provides production support for the artist Hera Büyüktaşçıyan’s project for the 5th New Museum Triennial 2021, held on 28 October 2021 – 23 January 2022. Curated by Margot Norton and Jamillah James, “Soft Water Hard Stone,” taken from a Brazilian proverb, brings together works across mediums by forty artists and collectives from around the world.
The Triennial recognizes artists re-envisioning traditional models, materials, and techniques beyond established paradigms. Their works exalt states of transformation, calling attention to the malleability of structures, porous and unstable surfaces, and the fluid and adaptable potential of both technological and organic mediums. Throughout the exhibition, artists address the regenerative potential of the natural world and our inseparable relationship to it and grapple with entrenched legacies of colonialism, displacement, and violence.
Hera Büyüktaşçıyan (Born in 1984, Istanbul) uses the notion of the other and combines it with the concepts of absence and invisibility, in order to compose an imaginary connection between identity, memory, space and time through the other. By using metaphors from local myths, historic and iconographic elements, she opens a new narrative scope for the other.
The New Museum Triennial (Est. in 2009) is the only recurring international exhibition in New York City devoted to emerging artists from around the world, providing an important platform for a new generation of artists who are shaping the current discourse of contemporary art and the future of culture
