Mathilde Melek An, born in 1989 in Vincennes, France, is a Franco-Turkish artist whose work reflects the rich duality of her heritage. Straddling the cultural landscapes of France and Turkey, she bases her artistic practice between Normandy and Istanbul.
In 2012, An earned her DNSEP from the École Supérieure des Arts et Médias de Caen/Cherbourg in France, following an enriching experience in the Erasmus program at the University of Mimar Sinan in Istanbul in 2011.
Her artistic trajectory features a dynamic array of solo and group exhibitions across the globe, among them Made Anywhere at the Fondation Fiminco in Paris [2024], Mamut Art Project in Istanbul [2022], MArchives Forms in Mexico City [2018], and Mavi Melek in Berlin [2016] as part of the Month of Photography OFF Berlin.
Collaborating with various artists and collectives has also been a significant aspect of her work. Highlights include her participation in Murmuration at the festival Mahalla in Istanbul [2021], and Manhattan... I only could dream of it, with the collective Wasteband, in New York City [2016].
Beyond visual arts, An has ventured into performance art with projects with projects such as Golddess and Uzun ince bir yoldayim. She showcased her performances at festivals and events such as New Narratives at the Festival Mahalla in Malta [2018], the Örebro Biennale in Sweden [2019], and the Festival Giswil Art International in Switzerland [2022].
Through diverse forms of expression, Mathilde Melek An has cultivated a unique artistic language that explores memory, identity, and multiculturalism, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.
